behringer MX602 modifications

“keyboard submix and monitoring mod”

If you’re playing live music you need/would like to have a good monitor mix. The best monitor mix is your own monitormix. ;-) As a keyboard player i also need a small stereo submix of my keys,sampler...

Only the big mixers have switches for pre/post fader aux and the ability to disconnect input channels completely from the main mix. But Iam fed up with dragging heavy cases with me. 0:-)
So I did some mods for the nice ‘n small behringer mx602 mixer.

Channel 1 is a mic which is placed infront of the guitar cabinet, channel 2 is the monitor signal coming from the FOH desk (only vocals, sometimes drums).
I wanted to remove these two channels completely from the main mix. I removed the four summing resistors (5k1) on channel 1&2. So I don’t get in trouble if the level pots aren’t fully counterclockwise.

I wanted to use the aux send for my in ear monitor mix... but the aux is POST FADER only. But it is quiet easy to change it from POST to PRE. I use the opamp output after the eq for this. All aux signals are summed by 5k1 resistors. I just removed the SMD resistor and installed a standard 5k1 resistor between the opamp and one pad of the smd resistor.

For the keyboard submix i use the two stereo channels. While I need a 3rd stereo input i can use the stereo return for this.. there is also a volume pot for this.

As a keyboardplayer you’ll like to know if the sound is correct for the next song. So I just use the CONTROL ROMM OUT as my “MAIN MIX”. The advantage is... i can switch all signal on and off to the main mix (to FOH) with the 2Track To Control Room Switch. (It switches between the 2Track Cinch Input and the main mix, so if I press the button with no tape input used it will mute the control room output)
This is also helpful if you need to practice a part of the next song...(with the keyboard signal bypassed on the front mix) ;-)))

UB1002

In the meantime.. i bought another behringer mixer.. the UB1002. With “invisible mic preamps” and regretfully again... 4580s... :-/ ;-)

The modifications:

  • I removed the PAN pots at the mono channels and replaced them with switches to route the signal to the main bus or not. (the two channels are only for my in-ear mix. To seperate these signals from my monitor sub mix i added these switches, otherwise the monitorsignal could be hearable on the foh-mix.
  • The aux sends are generally POST fader. So i changed them to PRE fader at all channels. (channel 1-10) So the FX send becomes the IEM main volume.
  • I removed the pot for the control room, because i only need the main output, but replaced the pot with resistors - so the control room out will work. I added a switch to seperate the main bus before the mixbus. So i can mute all signals at once. (so i can check the sounds, sampler etc... while the main mix is muted but the signals can be heared with the inear system.
